Content Pruning: When to Delete Instead of Update
KERVAN Team
February 20, 2026 4 min readNot every old post deserves a refresh. Sometimes deleting is the higher-traffic move.
Content refreshes get all the attention, but pruning is the less glamorous sibling that often moves the needle faster on a bloated site.
When Deletion Beats a Rewrite
- The topic is no longer relevant to your business and never will be again.
- Traffic and backlinks are both near zero, so there's no equity to preserve with a 301.
- The page duplicates a stronger, more comprehensive piece you already have.
- It was thin AI-generated filler from a previous content push that never earned rankings.
Every low-value page you keep indexed dilutes your site's average quality signal. Sometimes the fastest way up is to remove the pages holding you down.
